By playing in an ensemble you have the opportunity to take part in concerts and events throughout the year, earning vital performance experience.
Making Music with Others
Making music is a fun and sociable activity. Joining a Music Centre activity gives you the chance to meet, play and perform with other like-minded musicians.
Virtual Music Centre
As part of your membership you can take part in our online activities under the Virtual Music Centre. This includes Beginner, Intermediate and Grade V Theory.
Sign up for Junior String Orchestra
Once your application has been submitted, you will be emailed regarding course dates and fees provided there is space in the ensemble. If there is not space for a new member to join straight away, the student will be placed on a waiting list. When a space is available, a member of the Create Music team will be in touch with all the relevant details you need.
Meet the Tutors
Simon Smith
Violin Teacher
Simon began playing the violin and viola through his local Music Service in Leeds and gained his music degree at the University of Hull, before heading to Cardiff to study for a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance. He joined Create Music (formerly East Sussex Music) in 2008 and teaches in the Newhaven area. Since 2022 Simon has been the Development and Partnership manager for the Lewes area, which includes overseeing Lewes Music Centre. Outside of work, Simon founded Sussex Strings, an amateur string orchestra that he leads and directs.
Stephen Giles
Violin & Viola Teacher
Stephen has worked with professional orchestras in the UK and abroad, in addition to working with chamber ensembles and in film and TV. He has worked with Create Music (formerly East Sussex Music) since 2000 and teaches violin and viola to children aged 5 to 18, in schools in the Lewes area, and in several ensembles across the service.
