Session Overview
What happens in Create Rocks sessions
Each Create:Rocks group works as a band, with pupils taking on clear musical roles. Sessions focus on:
- learning parts for different instruments
- listening and responding to others
- developing timing, dynamics and arrangement skills
- building towards a complete song that the band can perform together
Sessions are designed so pupils of mixed experience can succeed, with parts layered to support progression and confidence.
Sessions are carefully structured so that pupils learn how their individual musical roles contribute to the overall sound of the group. Over time, this helps pupils develop a stronger sense of musical responsibility, awareness of others and pride in collective achievement.
The emphasis is on learning with and from one another, with tutors guiding pupils through the process of rehearsing, refining and performing together.
Delivery is led by trusted, hub‑employed music tutors, trained and supported by Create Music to ensure consistent, high‑quality experiences across schools. Schools can be confident that Create:Rocks is delivered to a high musical and educational standard, with safeguarding, quality assurance and pastoral care embedded throughout.
Instruments
Pupils may explore instruments at the start of the programme before settling into a role within the band, helping to build ownership, teamwork and musical identity.
All instruments required to run Create:Rocks are supplied by Create Music as part of the programme, including a full band set‑up. Instruments are provided on free loan, removing barriers for families and schools and ensuring pupils can take part regardless of prior access to equipment.
Delivery Model
Create:Rocks is an in‑school, group‑based band programme delivered by Create Music tutors. Instruments are provided by Create Music as part of the programme.
Schools are invited to express interest, and delivery is phased based on pupil demand, tutor availability and equipment capacity. There is no obligation for schools at the expression‑of‑interest stage.
Create Music works closely with each school to plan delivery in a way that fits their individual context. This may include discussion around available space, timetabling, storage and access to teaching areas, ensuring that arrangements are clear and appropriate before sessions begin.
Our aim is to make the experience straightforward for schools, while maintaining clarity and consistency for pupils and families.
Part of the wider Create Music offer
Create:Rocks forms part of Create Music’s wider work supporting high‑quality music education across the region. As the Department for Education‑recognised Music Hub, Create Music works with schools, families and partners to ensure that children and young people can access meaningful, progressive musical opportunities.
For some pupils, Create:Rocks may be their first experience of playing in a band. For others, it can provide a stepping stone into instrumental lessons, ensembles or wider music‑making opportunities supported by Create Music.
Costs
Create:Rocks is a charged programme for families, with instruments provided on free loan to the school. Financial barriers are reduced through the Create Music Bursary Fund, ensuring access for pupils who may otherwise be unable to take part.
