What you will learn

Percussionists will have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of instruments – tuned percussion (xylophone, glockenspiel and marimba), timpani, snare drum and world percussion instruments. Each instrument has a different technique but the performance skills share the key elements of producing a clear and controlled sound, playing in time and listening to how your part fits into an ensemble.

Making a good sound

The instruments will be introduced separately so that time can be spent establishing the required technique for each. This will be supported by technical exercises (e.g. scales for tuned instruments, sticking techniques for timpani and snare drum) and performances of well-known repertoire to develop performance skills.
