Thousands of young voices will fill Brighton Dome on 2–3 December as the One Voice Christmas concerts come to the historic venue for the first time. More than 2,400 primary school children from 84 schools across Sussex will take part.
One Voice is a year-round singing education programme giving thousands of children across Sussex the opportunity to improve their vocal confidence, experience the joy of singing together and perform on stage with the Glyndebourne Chorus, in festive concerts across the region.
This year there are more performances than ever before, with 11 concerts across three major Sussex venues: Brighton Dome, Glyndebourne and the De La Warr Pavilion. It‘s the first time the concerts have come to the iconic Brighton Dome Concert Hall, marking a new chapter for the project.
Create Music, who deliver the programme in partnership with Glyndebourne and De La Warr Pavilion, is the region’s music education hub, and is part of Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival. They engage nearly 20,000 children a year across Sussex through music lessons, ensembles and creative projects.
Peter Chivers, Director of Create Music, said:
“We’re thrilled to bring One Voice to Brighton Dome this year. The programme continues to grow, giving thousands of children the joy of singing together, the confidence to perform and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a large musical community. Music supports children’s wellbeing and helps them feel connected, and One Voice shows the impact we can create when schools and cultural organisations work together across Sussex.”
This year’s concerts will feature an expanded programme and a new mix of songs from Europe, the USA and Lebanon, alongside celebrations of Hanukkah, local festive traditions and new takes on the Christmas story. Music is performed by a massed choir of Key Stage 2 pupils joined by a Glyndebourne soloist and talented young musicians from Create Music including its Youth String Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.
The One Voice Festival of Singing takes place across Brighton Dome, Glyndebourne and De La Warr Pavilion Tue 2 Dec–Tue 16 Dec, and is made possible with additional support from Glyndebourne and Arts Council England.
