The bassoon is the largest member of the woodwind family, producing a rich, sonorous sound. The bassoon has a wide range and though it often plays a bass part, is capable of playing much higher notes, as can be heard in the opening of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. The bassoon is most often heard in an orchestra, playing music from classical symphonies to modern film scores.
The largest of the woodwind family, the bassoon is played in a similar way to the oboe, using a double reed. With its wide range of notes, the bassoon is a versatile instrument, important both in an ensemble and played solo.
You will learn correct posture and hand positions as well as developing their embouchure and breathing techniques to be able to produce the wide tone range the bassoon is famed for.
