BOLLO SOUND AND VISION WORKSHOPS

2 Nov 2023

Create Music Hub partner, Bollo Sound and Vision, offered three schools in Hastings & Rother two half day workshops in Gambian traditional music.

Over their two-day projects, a class from each school learnt how to play and sing traditional music of The Gambia and were given the opportunity to create their own performance through improvisation around song.

The project is inclusive, with those already playing a musical instrument learning the piece on their instrument as others learnt drumming patterns of the songs and sung the lyrics.

Alongside lead facilitator Musa Mboob, the children and young people had guest appearances from Linos Wengara, a Mbira player from Zimbabwe, and Ghanaian guitarist Jo. These were inspiring workshops, and the concerts following the in-school workshops culminated in very moving performances for the whole school communities.

Nearly 100 children and young people in Hastings & Rother were able to participate in the workshops and audiences across the schools were given the opportunity to absorb the musical and traditional experiences of The Gambia.
