The Old Woman Who Lived in a Vinegar Bottle

A story with songs for all KS1 children and their class teachers to use in school and a new collaborative performance opportunity for Year 2 classes to come together in community venues in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove in summer 2026

Create Music has commissioned writer Hazel Gould and composer John Webb to make a new musical story with songs and narration, co-created with Year 2 children in Bexhill and Hastings. In story, songs and movement, you will meet the old lady and her cat, Chutney, as they wish their way from a vinegar bottle to a castle with the help of blackberry-loving fairy. This resource is designed to be used in school with the option of year 2 classes taking part in community performances.

Costs and additional support

Costs

A £50 school contribution will be payable for each participating school based on a class group of 30 children* participating in the community performance.

*We have limited capacity at each of the venues so spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis. We will allocate schools 30 spaces (or a class group) in the first instance, but you can request to bring more children which will be recorded on a waiting list. If we have capacity after the deadline of 30th January, we will allocate additional places from the waiting list. Schools bringing more than 30 students will be charged an additional £1.50 per child.

Additional Support

Schools will receive the full resource pack and are encouraged to join one of the launch events for teachers to learn the songs, explore the creative exercises included.

These comprehensive resources are designed to be used by classroom teachers or music specialist teachers to learn the songs and story in school. These include:

  • Audio tracks to learn and accompany the songs
  • Makaton videos to encourage multi-sensory learning and accessibility
  • Guided lesson plans to support you to deliver your summer term music curriculum
  • Guidance about staging your own performance in school
