Our Classroom Instrumental Teaching programme, which is linked to the National Plan for Music Education, provides a whole-class instrumental learning opportunity for KS2 children in schools across East Sussex. Led by a Create Music specialist instrumental teacher, supported by the class teacher or music co-ordinator, pupils experience the excitement of practical music making for up to 30 weeks.
Musical skills learnt during First Access include:
- Instrumental technique
- Ensemble skills
- Links to composing and improvising
- Performance skills
- Working creatively as part of a team
A variety of instruments are offered as part of First Access, subject to availability, including clarinet, djembe, flute, guitar, recorder, trombone, trumpet, ukulele and violin.
Following their First Access experience, all pupils are offered a variety of progression pathways to further their interest and love of music. Options for pupils to continue their musical journey include:
- Choosing to continue playing the same instrument
- Choosing to learn a different instrument
- Accessing our Further Access programme (please see below for details)
- Taking part in a school-based music activity such as a choir or band
- Joining a Music Centre class
- Attending a course-based activity such as the Create Music Summer School.
The duration of the programme and length of each session is tailored to meet the needs of each school and can vary from 10 weeks of 30 minutes duration to 30 weeks of an hour.
Fee: £43.20 per hour collated and includes free loan of the instruments for the duration of the programme. Instruments will be allocated according to resources available, or schools may choose to use instruments already available in school.
